What is Arterial occlusive disease?

Arterial occlusive disease : insufficient blood supply in the arteries; usually in legs.
may be acute or chronic.

Acute arterial occlusive disease
a. etiology
i. embolism, thrombosis, and trauma (illustration 1 illustration 2 )
ii. femoral artery most often affected

Assessment Findings

  • pain in affected limb
  • cyanosis in affected limb
  • paresthesia in affected limb
  • if untreated, gangrene

Management

  1. pharmacology anticoagulants
  2. surgical treatment: embolectomy, bypass of affected artery (illustration ), amputation of limb,percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty
