Screening for Diabetes Mellitus
For client 20 years and older
1. Assess family history of diabetes
2. Symptoms of diabetes
* Polyuria- Increased frequency and amount of urination
* Polydypsia- Increased thirst
* Unexplained weight loss
3. If at special risk for diabetes
*Hypertensive
*Overweight
*Women who have delivered a baby weighing over 9lbs
*Woman who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes
Blood test for serum or plasma glucose
Fasting blood sugar (FBS) - Fasting is define as no caloric intake for atleast eight hours; this
include no food, juices, milk; only water is allowed.
Two-hour blood sugar test – Performed two hour after using 75g glucose dissolved in water of
after a good meal.
Oral Glucose a Tolerance Test (OGTT) is not recommended for routine clinical use nor
screening purposes.
Fasting Blood Sugar Values
*109mg% –
*110 -125mg% – Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT)
*126 mg% – Possible Diabetes Mellitus
Criteria for Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus
1. Symptoms of diabetes plus RBS >200mg/dl (11.1 mmol/L)
2. FBS > 126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/L)
3. two-our sugar >200mg/dl (11.1mmol/L) during an OgTTn or Oral glucose tolerance Test.
Repeat Testing on a different day should be done to confirm these criteria.
