Expanded Program for Immunization
Vaccines are very sensitive at various temperatures. To avoid spoilage and maintain its potency, vaccines need to be stored at correct temperature.
Type/Form of Vaccines Storage Temperature
Most Sensitive to Heat
Measles (freeze dried) -15 to -25 Degree Celsius at the freezer
Oral Polio (Alive attenuated) -15 to -25 Degree Celsius at the freezer
Least sensitive to Heat
DPT +20 to +8 Degree Celsius in the Body of the refrigerator
“D” Toxoid which is weakened toxin
“P” Killed bacteria
“T” Toxoid which is a weakened toxin
Hepa B. +20 to +8 Degree Celsius in the Body of the refrigerator
BCG (freeze dried) +20 to +8 Degree Celsius in the Body of the refrigerator
Tetanus Toxoid +20 to +8 Degree Celsius in the Body of the refrigerator
Special Considerations
*When transporting, storing and handling vaccines, special care must be given to provide
quality potent vaccines among the targets
*Monitor the temperature for vaccines is done twice a day early in the morning and in the
afternoon before going home
Vaccine: BCG
Minimun Age at firts dose: Birth/anytime
# of doses: 1
Reason: BCG given at After birth earliest possible Age protect thePossibility of TBMeningitis andOther Tb infectiousin which infants areprone.
Vaccine: DPT
Minimun Age at firts dose: 6 weeks
# of doses: 3 4 weeks
Minimum interval between doses:
Reason: An early start withDPT reduces theChance of severe Pertussis.
Vaccine: OPV
Minimun Age at firts dose: 6 weeks
# of doses: 3
Minimum interval between doses: 4 weeks
Reason: The extent of protection against polio is increased the earlier the OPV is given.
Vaccine: Hepa. B
Minimun Age at firts dose: At birth
# of doses: 3
Minimum interval between doses:6 weeks interval
Reason: *An early start of From first dose to Hep.B reduces theChance of bieng
infected and carrier. *Prevent liver cancer, and liver cirrhosis
Vaccine: Measles
Minimun Age at firts dose: 9 months
Reason: At least 85% of measles can be prevented by immunization at this age prevents death 2% die, malnutrition, pneumonia, diarrhea (atleast 20%) get these complications from measles
