The diagnosis of dengue is usually made clinically. The classic picture is high fever with no localizing source of infection, a petechial rash with thrombocytopenia and relative leukopenia – low platelet and white blood cell count.
1. Tourniquet Test (Rumpel Leads Test)
a. Inflate the blood pressure cuff on the upper arm to a point midway between the systolic and
diastolic pressure for 5 munites.
b. Release cuff and make an imaginary 2.5cm. square or 1 icnh saquare just below the cuff, at
the antecubital fossa
c. Count the number of petichiae inside the box
d. A test is (+) when 2o or more petechiae per 2.5 cm square or 1 inch square are observed.
2. Serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) studies are available to confirm the
diagnosis of dengue if clinically indicated.
